Creative Juice #034: Pet Name Tags

My friend - the Feisty Feline - approached me regarding the design of name tags that were supposed to be used for pets in their parish's upcoming event on the Feast of St. Francis of Assisi - which is the blessing of pets. Below are some of the preliminary layouts I've came up bound for comments and revisions.

I wanted the tags to reflect the solemnity of the event so for the first batch, I used toned down earth colours - sepia and olive, old Christian illustrations of St. Francis, and even tweaked a photo of a religious brother walking a pack of dogs. But apparently, it came a bit too formal for the occasion which my friend doesn’t really have in mind. So I came up with a second batch that reflects a fun design with the use of Pet Society characters (found over Google Image Search Engine) and a more playful variety of colours.

Here you can see the influences I've mentioned and the overall creative process I went through:

Solemn and a rather formal approach.
A mash of the traditional graphics and playful Pet Society illustration.
Dominant cartoony illustrations but with a reserved color hue.
(Notice the background I used: it was one of The Creative Dork's illustrations I shamelessly
copy-pasted and cropped without due permission T_T)
Fun and playful cartoons and a color palette
that ironically reminds me of an LGBT advocacy group. Yikes!

  1. How does the color palette remind you of an LGBT advocacy group? Do expound. And, why "yikes?" Is that bigotry I sense?

  2. The rainbow colors simply remind me of so. And chill ka lang. It's not bigotry. 'Yikes' come from the irony.

  3. @ Kuya Red: The rainbow flag, sometimes pride flag, LGBT pride flag or gay pride flag, is a symbol of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) pride and LGBT social movements in use since the 1970s. The colours reflect the diversity of the LGBT community, and the flag is often used as a symbol of gay pride in LGBT rights marches.

  4. I know about the rainbow flag, believe me. No need to school me on this one. But the spectrum is usually the strictly ROYGBIV band, your's isn't. That's why I wondered how that could evoke the pride flag.

Also, "yikes" is usually a statement of surprise with a mild disgust and/ or fear implied. I may be overthinking this one, just wanted you to know its connotation.

  5. @Kuya Red: haha. yes Kuya Red, you are overthinking this one. My point is, what could be more ironic than the sentiment of using an LGBT pride flag in an event that is organized by an ecclesial community?

Can't I ruminate on this one without being accused of bigotry? Is that bigotry I sense? Peace :)

  6. That's really cute! Your pet would definitely love that. It's great that you can always customize your own tags.
